To perform a hydrostatic test, a seal is installed in a duct, leaving approximately 12 inches (30.5 cm) of empty duct at one end. This allows us to accurately measure the water pressure within the seal. The water pressure within a seal is typically expressed in feet or meters of water height, which can be visualized as the depth of water above the seal.

By testing and classifying joints, we can determine their resistance to higher water pressures, which is an important consideration when selecting a sealant for critical installations. When conducting a hydrostatic test, it is important to use constant, direct water pressure in order to yield consistent results and accurately predict the performance of the seal. A seal that passes inspection but fails soon after or during a crisis is not a reliable seal. The consequences of using an inadequate seal can be severe, resulting in damaged cables and equipment, as well as service interruptions that can be particularly devastating for essential facilities such as 911 call centers, hospitals, petrochemical plants, and nuclear power plants. Therefore, it is crucial to carefully consider the application parameters and technical specifications of a chemical or mechanical sealing product before making a selection.
